Finally…. Instead of running my own software (and I looked at quite a few), I decided to run the store from Etsy. It costs to post items for sale, and they take a cut of the sale, but the store will get a much larger viewing audience than if it were self-contained within my blog. You should see a link across the title bar now labeled ‘Store’. (If not, PLEASE let me know! I can see it.) That page will show the first several items for sale in my Etsy shop. The entire shop can be seen at http://woodturningblog.etsy.com Please take a look!

Wow, that was a lot of work! We finally finished the workroom. There’s still some touch-ups that need to be done, as well as one corner that needs re-mudding, sanding, and painting, but the room could be used as soon as I put tools back in, so we’ll call it done! No more insulation dropping sawdust on me all day long (or insulation falling on me, for that matter)…. Walls to actually hang things on (instead of concrete)…. Outlets…. And no more non-woodworking related things in my shop getting sawdust all over them. Woohooo! Thanks, everyone who helped! Here are some before and after pics.

Turning has come to a halt for the next few weeks while I start working on the workroom again. There’s still some sheetrock to hang, lots of mudding to do, a light fixture to hang, and maybe even painting to be done. We have most of the sheetrock hung, but still lack a corner and a small section of ceiling. I’ll post some before and after pics once I get closer to the ‘after’ stage. Special thanks to mom, dad, wifey, and the kid for what they’ve helped with so far! (And what they have in store for them still. ) Getting this completed will cut down on the dust in the room considerably. Previously, there was no ceiling, just insulation hanging down. It did a great job of collecting dust and dropping it whenever I looked up. Hopefully it will reduce the noise a bit as well, but that remains to be seen. Wish us luck!

This past Father’s Day, my wife asked me to make a fishing pole stand for her stepdad. She thought it was a 20-minute deal, but I of course made it more complicated..

The two disks and the braces are cut from a pre-sanded laminated (pine, I think) board from Lowe’s, and the column is poplar. Weather-stripping is used to grip the rods, and felt circles are inset into the base (I didn’t have any cork). The column is actually larger than my lathe will handle, so I turned it in two pieces and glued it together with a dowel in the center for added strength. The top disk has a 2″ (or so) hole cut in the center and sits on a tenon with the top of the column flush with the tabletop. This gives the top some stability. The turning on the very top hides this connection, and is held in place with glue and another dowel. (That turning is supposed to look like a bobber, although I’m not sure how successful I was!) The top is stained and then protected with a ‘bar top’ finish, which allowed me to embed the fishhooks seen between the rod slots. The column is screwed into the base from below, as well as held in place by the braces. The whole thing sits atop a lazy susan mechanism. Click for a full-sized pic.
